Rotterdam Invests in a Sustainable Future with the Container Exchange Route

To strengthen its position as a leading container hub, the Port of Rotterdam is developing a unique infrastructureconnecting terminals, depots, and storage facilities on the Maasvlakte. Known as the Container Exchange Route (CER), this dedicated network improves inter-terminal connectivity and enhances links to the hinterland, resulting in shorter dwell times and lower costs for container movements.

Fragmentation of Volumes

Due to increasing cooperation between shipping lines—such as vessel-sharing agreements—container volumes are becoming more fragmented across the five deep-sea terminals. To maintain its position as Europe’s most important container gateway, and to stay ahead of Antwerp and Hamburg, Rotterdam is building a dedicated, two-lane roadexclusively for container transport across the Maasvlakte.

The Container Exchange Route, expected to be completed in 2019, will allow for consolidation of container flows, improving efficiency and reducing unnecessary handling.

Boost in Container Throughput

With this investment in efficient container exchange and the operation of two new terminals on the Maasvlakte, the Port of Rotterdam anticipates continued growth in container throughput and improved competitiveness in the global shipping landscape.
