Container transport: Full container load (FCL)
With container transport various container sizes are available. The smallest container size used in shipments is the 20-foot (ft) container, while the largest size is the 40 ft High Cube container. The length of a container is expressed in feet (ft). These standardised sizes are ideal for transporting goods by sea and can subsequently be transferred to road, rail or inland waterways. The standard size for a container is referred to as TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit). A TEU is approximately 20 feet (about 6 metres) long, 8 feet (2.44 metres) wide and 8 1/2 feet (2.60 metres) high. The 40 ft High Cube containers are approximately 30 cm higher than the standard 40 ft container, which provides more space to load pallets at a higher level.
