Maersk Split into Just Two Divisions: Energy and Transport

Contrary to earlier speculation that Maersk would be divided into five separate units—covering shipping, oil tankers, terminals, drilling rigs, and maritime services—Danish newspaper Berlingske Business now reports a simplified splitinto two independent companies:

• A standalone energy group

• A separate transport and logistics group

No further break-up is expected.

Energy Group:

• Maersk Oil

• Maersk Drilling

Transport Group:

• Maersk Line

• Damco

• APM Terminals

• Svitzer

• Maersk Tankers

Damco Not for Sale (Yet)

Despite years of losses, the Dutch logistics provider Damco will remain part of Maersk for the time being. Since its formation in 2009, Damco has consistently operated at a loss, and in 2014 it received a $451 million capital injectionfrom its parent company.

Key Challenge: North Sea Concession Rights

One of the most pressing issues following the split is the status of Maersk Oil’s North Sea concession rights. As the company separates into two legal entities, these licenses will likely need to be renegotiated with government authorities, potentially complicating Maersk Oil's operations in the region.
