P&I clubs

The P&I clubs (Protection and Indemnity Club) are agreements that shipping lines form among themselves to insure those risks that are not covered by the normal marine insurances.

Packing Instruction

Document describing how the goods must be packed.

Packing list

Packing list (also known as delivery note, unpacking note, delivery slip, delivery list or shipping list) is a document that describes the contents and often the dimensions and weight of each package or container. It serves to inform all parties involved in a transport about the contents, including transport companies and government agencies such as customs.

Packing Unit

Package in which a standard quantity of products of a specific product type is packed, so that the products contained in the packing unit do not require additional packaging for storage and shipment.

Pallet

Low portable platform, usually of wood, on which cargo is stacked to facilitate transport.

Pallet Wide

Pallet Wide (PW) containers, just like the standard trailers in road transport, have an internal width of 2.50 m. These containers are used on short sea routes. The handling per cargo unit is faster and cheaper than with trailers. PW containers exist in both 40ft and 45ft format. The 45ft PW type is often also high cube, so that it is about 30 cm higher in structure than the standard 45ft PW container. As a result, taller items and/or more goods can be loaded while the sea freight is usually equal to that of a standard 45ft PW container.

Payload

Payload is the maximum permitted cargo weight for a container. This value is stated on the right-hand container door. The cargo weight may not exceed this value. However, the maximum permitted cargo weight can differ per country, so that the container can sometimes not be loaded up to this maximum.

Payment against Documents

Instructions issued by a seller to a bank that the transfer of the documents of title may only take place after payment of the invoice.

Payment terms

Depending on the service offered and the customer-supplier relationship, payment terms are agreed. With imports, most costs for the customer are advanced by the logistics service provider. As a result, the usual payment term for imports will be: payment before delivery of the goods. At The Freight Hero, as a regular customer you can also pay after delivery. With exports, the usual payment term is: payment within 14 days of the invoice date. This can be deviated from by means of a special arrangement through further mutual consultation. The agreed payment term is recorded in writing.

PCC

This abbreviation stands for Pure Car Carriers (PCC). These are specially designed ships for the transport of very large quantities of passenger cars. The largest PCCs can carry about 6,000 cars, divided over 13 decks.

PCTC

This abbreviation stands for Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC). These are specially designed ships for the transport of very large quantities of passenger cars and trucks. The distance between most decks can be changed depending on whether passenger cars or trucks are being transported.

Peak Season Surcharge (PSS)

Shipping lines charge a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) as soon as a shortage of capacity arises during a busy period. The increasing demand leads to a shortage of space and additional costs for repositioning equipment. Shipping lines reserve the right to introduce and extend this surcharge at all times.

Piracy Risk Surcharge

In connection with piracy, an increased risk applies in the Gulf of Aden for shipping lines. These shipping lines see this risk reflected in their costs in the form of increased insurance premiums. Therefore, for the duration of this threat of piracy, an additional surcharge is charged on top of the sea freight. The Piracy Risk Surcharge (PRS) is also called Gulf of Aden Surcharge.

POD

POD is the abbreviation of port of discharge, i.e. the port in which the goods are discharged.

POL

POL is the abbreviation of port of loading, i.e. the port in which the goods are loaded.

Port

In international transport, port refers to a harbour.

Port side

Port side is the left-hand side of a ship.

Pre-carriage Charge

The costs of the local transport before the goods are delivered to the loading port / the airport.

Preferential arrangement

A preferential arrangement is an agreement concluded between the European Union and third countries. The EU has concluded preferential trade agreements with a number of countries. These are agreements stipulating that no import duties are levied, because products are imported from certain countries. The EU has concluded trade agreements with: - EFTA countries (Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland) - OCT countries (for example the Netherlands Antilles, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, the Falkland Islands, the Virgin Islands and Greenland) - Countries around the Mediterranean Sea (for example countries from North Africa and the Middle East) - South Africa and Mexico.
