Logistics terms G

Gantry crane

A gantry crane is a mobile crane in the shape of a gantry. Almost all container terminals are equipped with such cranes. Gantry cranes are also used for unloading bulk carriers.

Gas-free declaration

Under the Working Conditions Act, every employer has the duty to create as healthy and safe a workplace as possible for his employees. In this context, employers must, among other things, have it investigated whether there is a danger of suffocation, intoxication, poisoning, fire or explosion when entering and/or unloading containers. This investigation must be carried out by a gas measurement expert. The gas measurement expert may only release a container if the measured gas concentration is lower than the so-called MAC value. If it appears that a container can be unloaded without danger, he issues a gas-free declaration. To minimise the risks for employees, it is advisable to measure containers before opening for the presence of possible toxic gases.

General Preference Code

The General Preference Code (GPC) is a 3-digit code added to the statistical code on clearance. For various reasons, certain countries have to pay fewer import duties than other countries. This applies, for example, to poor countries. To be eligible for a reduction, the importer must substantiate the origin of the goods by presenting a Form A, declaration of origin. This reduction does not apply to other customs duties. A Certificate of Origin is not a Form A and is not automatically sufficient to claim a reduction. For import from Turkey, a valid ATR1 document must be presented. The EU has close trade relations with various countries (think, for example, of South Africa and Norway). For such countries, a Certificate of Origin is often sufficient.

General Rate Increase

GRI (General Rate Increase) is the average amount by which the shipping line's current basic rate increases.

Genset

A genset (generator set) is used to supply the reefer container with power when there is no power from the shore available. A genset is used, for example, for long distances by road or when chilled or temperature-sensitive goods have to be moved. Most gensets are clamped to the upper front of the refrigerated container.

Gross Ton

The volume of all enclosed spaces of the ship. The gross tonnage (Gross Ton) is expressed in Moorsom tons (1 Moorsom ton = 100 cuft = 2.83 cbm).

Gross vehicle weight (GVW)

The combined total weight of a vehicle and the container, including the power unit.

Gross Weight

The full weight of goods, packaging and truck or container, ready for shipment.

GSP

Generalised System of Preferences: This is an agreement between the EU, other Western countries and a number of developing countries regarding exemption from or reduction of import duties. To make use of this, a proof of origin such as a EUR.1 or ATR must be presented with the import declaration. Alternatively, the exporter must hold the REX status of Registered Exporter. The latter replaces the Form A.

Gulf of Aden Surcharge

In connection with piracy, an increased risk applies in the Gulf of Aden for shipping lines. These shipping lines see this risk reflected in their costs in the form of increased insurance premiums. Therefore, for the duration of this threat of piracy, an additional surcharge is charged on top of the sea freight. The Piracy Risk is also called Gulf of Aden Surcharge.
