ACI Filing Canada

The ACI, Advance Commercial Information initiative, was implemented in April 2004 by the CBSA, the Canada Border Services Agency. The ACI requires carriers to transmit marine cargo data electronically to the CBSA 24 hours before the cargo is loaded at a foreign port. The data must be supplied by the shipper.

Advance fee

The freight forwarder pays various costs in advance for the customer. Because this often involves net costs that are passed on one-to-one, the freight forwarder may set a fee in the form of a percentage of the amount paid in advance. This fee is also known as a credit limitation charge.

Advance fee commission

Various costs are paid in advance for the customer by the freight forwarder. Because this often involves net costs that are passed on one-to-one, a commission can be charged by the freight forwarder in the form of a percentage of the amount advanced. This is also known as a credit limitation charge.

AEO

Companies and suppliers dealing with goods that cross the European border are subject to European customs legislation. In addition to the legislation, the European Union wants to create better facilities for companies, leading to fewer logistical delays and lower administrative costs. That is why the AEO certificate was created. Since 1 January 2008, the status of Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) can be applied for, which is valid throughout the EU. The introduction of the AEO status is an important step in the efforts of the Dutch customs to 'horizontalise' control. This means mutual responsibility for a secure supply chain; the responsibility for safe cross-border goods flows. Companies engaged in international trade can apply for the status of Authorised Economic Operator (AEO). The AEO certificate offers many advantages in international business. AEO-certified companies, for example, experience fewer delays at customs controls.

Air freight

Air freight is the unaccompanied transport of goods between two airports. It is a form of transport that meets high demands such as delivery reliability and speed.

Air freight handling charges

Air freight handling charges are the costs to cover the costs incurred to load the goods into/out of the aircraft. The goods are handled by the handling agent in a secured part of the airport. Here the air freight pallets are built up and/or broken down. With imports, the goods are then distributed among the various air freight forwarders for further distribution. With exports, the goods from the various air freight forwarders are collected.

Air Waybill

The document that covers transport by air. It is issued by the airline, whether an airline or a freight forwarder, as a non-negotiable document that serves as a receipt for the goods to the shipper and contains the conditions of carriage. It also shows the details of the consignee, so they can be contacted on arrival of the goods.

AIS

A system used on ships and by Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by digitally exchanging data with other nearby ships and VTS stations. Information such as unique identification, position, course and speed can be displayed on a screen. AIS is intended to assist a ship's officers and to enable maritime authorities to track vessel movements. In the Netherlands, every ship longer than 20 metres must have an AIS on board.

AMS-FILING

Automated Manifest System, abbreviated as AMS, is an integral security system of US customs. The system relates to goods transport with the final destinations of the United States and Mexico and also applies to goods that are transhipped in these countries for onward goods transport. US customs must know what has been loaded on board 24 hours before the ship departs from the loading port. The system was established in 2004 and, in addition to sea freight, the system also applies to air freight, rail and road transport.

The ATR certificate cannot be used for most agricultural products and steel products. For these products, the origin is decisive and a EUR.1 certificate is required. Customs has a full list of excluded products. In the case of export to Turkey, the ATR certificate must be completed by the exporter. Customs issues the valid export permit. This takes place at the same time as the export declaration. If the certificate is used to import goods from Turkey, you must submit an ATR certificate together with the import declaration to customs. This certificate is validated by Turkish customs.
