The port of Shanghai is now the largest port in the world. Located at the Chinese city of Shanghai on the East China Sea, the port comprises a deep-water harbour — Yangshan Deepwater Port — and an inland harbour with multiple container terminals. The port operator is Shanghai International Port Company Limited (SIPG), the successor of the Shanghai Port Authority.
Importing from China (Shanghai)
For importing Full Container Load (FCL) and Less than Container Load (LCL) shipments from Shanghai (China) to North-West Europe — the port of Rotterdam (Netherlands), the port of Antwerp (Belgium) and the port of Hamburg (Germany) — The Freight Hero uses the port of Shanghai for its sea-freight container service.
Yangshan Container Terminal
The port became internationally accessible after the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, after which it quickly became the largest harbour in the Far East. Between 1949 and 1991 growth was interrupted under Communism. In 1991 the Chinese authorities reopened the door to economic reforms and port expansion. The limited draught of the old harbour held the port back, but the opening of the Yangshan Container Terminal in 2005 unlocked massive growth. A quarter of all cargo entering or leaving China by ship is now transhipped at Shanghai.
