Massive Container Ship Runs Aground Near Hamburg

One of the largest container ships in the world ran aground off the coast near Hamburg, Germany, in early February 2016. The vessel in question, the CSCL Indian Ocean, measures nearly 400 meters in length and 54 meters in width, with a capacity of 19,000 containers.

The ship ran aground in the navigation channel near Stade, east of Hamburg on the Elbe River, for reasons that remain unknown. Fortunately, no one was injured. Although the incident disrupted maritime traffic in the area, operations were able to continue.

The CSCL Indian Ocean, owned by China Shipping, was commissioned just the year before and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
