America First and Great Again?

After his inauguration as President of the United States of America, Donald Trump promised to put "America First and Great Again". But will trade flows between America and Europe remain intact?

Infrastructure

Since Trump plans to cut taxes in the U.S. and invest a billion dollars in infrastructure, more and more economists expect that these investments will create opportunities and economic growth in the United States.
A growth of 0.4 percentage points is expected for the coming year in the U.S. — and economists even anticipate a doubling of that figure the following year.

Trade

Whether this growth will also lead to more imports and exports for the United States remains to be seen.
Trump announced that he would impose additional tariffs on the import of products that could also be manufactured within the U.S.

This has cast doubt on existing Trans-Pacific and Transatlantic trade agreements, which currently cover 60 percent of the global economy.
Even the trade deals with Canada and Mexico are no longer secure. Meanwhile, China is threatening Trump with high import duties.

Globalization

The American citizen who voted for Trump believes they have become a victim of globalization. Trump took advantage of this sentiment during his campaign and promised to resist further liberalization.

But will this really stop American companies from relocating to low-wage countries or reducing their investments in Europe?

In response, Europe and China are likely to raise tariffs on goods exported to the U.S. as well.

Jobs and Growth

Europe is currently investing more than all of Asia.
European companies invest almost ten times more in the U.S. than they do in China and India combined.

In doing so, Europe creates jobs and growth in America.
Surely there must be rational advisors in Trump’s circle who are whispering this in his ear?
